Jivya Soma Mashe was born in the Warli tribe, only 200 kilometres north of Mumbai. His story is very unique. Abandoned by his family at a young age, he became completely mute and turned to drawing as his sole means of expression. The Warli tradition of making art was previously ephemeral, practiced only during Warli rituals, but Jivya Soma Mashe drew every day, attracting the attention of top government officials in charge of preserving and promoting Warli art. The artist’s talent quickly spread across the country, and in 1976, he received India’s most prestigious art awards. From his withdrawal period as a child, Jivya Soma Mashe has kept his exceptional sense of imagination and emotion.
