Shirley Jaffe's work is marked by a break from abstract expressionism at the beginning of the 1960s towards geometric forms, dropping gesture in favour of flat, elementary compositions. Shirley Jaffe's paintings are destabilising to the eye. Shapes are juxtaposed and superposed on the canvas. The colours she uses are those of geometric abstraction, pure and primary against an unchanging white background.
