It has been said that Marc Desgrandchamps’ works represent liquid ghosts (Richard Leydier). Desgrandchamps peoples his great landscapes with the bluish hues of transparent figures through which the objects behind them materialize. This evanescence is the poetic key in his work. This ethereal quality aqueously flows into areas of light, paint drips. A world on the verge of disappearing. The dream-like aspect is so strong it makes it possible to get lost in a Desgrandchamps painting or engraving.
This lithograph was printed
in a monumental format similar to his gouaches. Inspired by a photograph by the
Englishman Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), a female figure stands on tiptoe
dominating a mountain landscape, a reference to the artist’s Savoyard origins
